As always, we take our responsibility to facilitate student learning very seriously, and expect our students to do their part to realize their potential. Because of this, we encourage students to keep up with their homework, and if that work starts falling behind, we recognize that the students may suffer in their learning and their grades. To help students who may forget their homework or for whatever reason fall behind, teachers may assign students to catch up during quiet, working lunches in our time out room. This is not meant as a punitive measure, but is effective in getting late work completed and reminding the student that they must meet their responsibilities with regard to their work one way or another.

This school year, Oxford Middle School will continue using the Collins Writing Program.  All core subject teachers were trained in Collins.  At OMS, teachers have been implementing the basics of Type 1 and Type 2 writing.  You may notice your children writing on alternating lines of notebook paper and working with FCA (focus correction areas).  More information about this program will be coming home in the near future.  Stay tuned...

During the summer of 2013, our teachers attended professional development in Keys to Literacy.  Many have participated in additional sessions of training in KTL over the past year.  Founded by Joan Sedita,Keys to Literacy addresses literacy in all grades by offering research-based professional development for content literacy instruction. Keys to Literacy instructional routines produce sustainable, long-term results. All OMS teachers will continue to implement the KTL routine throughout the year across the curriculum.  Ask your children to share those strategies with you; the opportunity for the students to share what they have learned with another person, strengthens their skills.
